I concur, its alive and well in the Jewish community, especially with the smaller and average organizations. In addition, as a sign of the times, I have seen there is a willingness for organizations to reach out to newer lists - a different constituency in the hope of making new friends and supporters.

To be fair to Hadassah, I think one ought to compare their work with their own Mission Statement.

I would guess that when asked what Hadassah's primary mission is, the majority of American Jews and Israelis would say "Don't they run hospitals?".

I think the internet has a strong foothold in the Israeli market and is only growing in popularity.

Radio on the other hand has been a fixture of Israeli culture for quite some time.

Although I think radio will have a tough time surpassing the web in popularity in the coming years, I do think it will always have a loyal following.

I want to make it clear that I do not want non-religious organizations to pose as religious.

However, there are many Jewish organizations that have a religious component to their mission, and they may want to place more emphasis on that aspect of what they do.

I would think that testing a religious list would be appropriate unless the organizations's message is counterintuitive to that approach.

Both organizations, especially YU, engaged in exceptionally poor oversight. They didn't need to know Bernie was a scammer.

In YU's case especially, the way the University allowed Ezra Merkin a free hand should absolutely reflect on how they are viewed for financial responsibility. The conflicts of interest are a matter of public record.

My brother went to YU and I grew up in Hadassah's Young Judaea's youth camps, TY and Year Course.

I think that while the Madoff scandal definitely tarnishes those two orgs good reputations, I think in the end it's more of a reflection on Madoff himself and not as much on his victims.

I really don't believe that YU or Hadassah knew that Bernie was a scammer and I don't think either of their Charity Navigator rankings should suffer because they were victimized.

Charity Navigator rates both Hadassah and YU with a 4 - based strictly on the percentage of money that goes to programs.

While it may be difficult to measure deliverables in general, with the investment decisions both of those organizations have engaged in over the past decade, bad financial management is a matter of public record.

You can't not consider this in evaluating them.

I think the charity Navigator rating only gives more credibility to the AJWS. Having a four star rating says to me that this organization is solid in terms of their finances ... and who would want to give to a non profit that might fall apart at the seams finacialy in a month or two from now from now? Another important question here is how would someone go about rating non-profits based on the things you mentioned like, efficiency, transparency and programing?
